Is there a Christmas market in Paphos?

Paphos has seasonal Christmas events and markets in December, smaller than the famous northern European ones. Dates and locations change each year, so check Paphos Municipality's announcements.

Does Paphos have a carnival?

Yes, a smaller one with parades and costume events before Lent. Limassol's ten-day carnival, about an hour away, is the biggest in Cyprus.

Events in Paphos follow the seasons: spring flower parades and Easter, summer beer and wine festivals, opera at the harbour castle in late summer, and a quieter winter of Christmas, Epiphany and carnival. Here is the calendar we give new arrivals, checked in September 2026.

Late summer is peak season: the Paphos Beer Festival in August, then the Pafos Aphrodite Festival opera at the harbour castle and the Paphos Wine Festival in September.

Easter is the biggest festival of the year. In 2027 Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May.

Moveable dates for 2027: Green Monday on 15 March, Kataklysmos (the Festival of the Flood) on 21 June.

Fixed public holidays with parades: 25 March, 1 October (Independence Day) and 28 October.

Paphos punches above its weight for a town of its size. It was a European Capital of Culture in 2017, it has a medieval castle on the harbour that doubles as an opera stage, and most villages in the district hold a saint's day fair each year.

Summer and early autumn: the big events in Paphos

Pafos Aphrodite Festival (late August or early September)

The headline event of the Paphos cultural year is open-air opera in the square in front of the medieval castle at Kato Paphos harbour. Recent productions include La Traviata in 2024 and Carmen in 2025, staged by visiting national opera companies from Georgia.

It runs for a few nights at the end of August or start of September. When we checked in September 2026 we couldn't confirm the details of this year's production, so watch the festival's official site and Facebook page from spring for 2027. Tickets for the best seats go early.

Paphos Beer Festival (August)

Billed by organisers as the largest festival of its kind in the region, with more than 100 beer brands, live music and competitions. It's a relaxed, family-friendly evening out, and a good first event if you don't know anyone yet. Our summer in Paphos guide covers how to cope with August evenings.

Paphos Wine Festival and Dionysia (September)

September is wine month. The Paphos Wine Festival brings local wineries together for tastings, with activities for children. In the village of Stroumbi, the three-day Dionysia festival celebrates the grape harvest with music, crafts and plenty of wine.

Tip

Summer village fairs

Many villages hold a panigyri (saint's day fair) in summer, when the church square fills with food stalls, music and dancing. They rarely advertise in English. Ask neighbours, or look for strings of lights going up around the local church.

Spring: flowers, Easter and the Festival of the Flood

Green Monday and carnival

Carnival runs in the weeks before Orthodox Lent, with costume parties and children's parades. Limassol's ten-day carnival is the island's biggest, about an hour's drive away. It ends on Green Monday (Kathara Deftera), the first day of Lent, when families picnic, eat vegetarian food and fly kites. In Paphos the kites go up around the lighthouse near the archaeological park. In 2027, Green Monday is on 15 March.

Easter

Orthodox Easter is the biggest festival of the Cypriot year, bigger than Christmas. In 2027 it falls on 2 May. Expect candlelit midnight services on Saturday, bonfires in church squares, and huge family lunches of roast lamb on Sunday. Book restaurants early; our restaurant guide is a good place to start. Shops and offices close over the Easter weekend.

Anthestiria Flower Festival (May)

Paphos's spring flower festival brings floats and parades down towards Kato Paphos harbour. It's a good one for children.

Kataklysmos (June)

The Festival of the Flood falls 50 days after Orthodox Easter and is a public holiday. Coastal towns hold events by the sea, with music, food stalls and the traditional throwing of water. In 2027 it falls on 21 June.

Autumn and winter: national days, Christmas and Epiphany

1 October is Cyprus Independence Day and 28 October is Ochi Day, both public holidays with school and military parades. 25 March is Greek Independence Day, with the same pattern. If your children are at a Cypriot school, expect them to be marching.

December brings Christmas lights and seasonal markets in town. They are modest compared with German-style markets, but the atmosphere on a mild December evening is hard to beat. On 6 January, Epiphany, priests throw a cross into the sea at harbours around the island and young swimmers dive to retrieve it.

Winter is also the busiest time for the resident social calendar. Walking groups, quiz nights and club events fill the gap left by the summer festivals. See our winter in Paphos guide for what else goes on.

Cyprus Mail, the English-language daily, for weekly what's-on listings.
Local Facebook groups for your area, where residents post quiz nights, charity events and village fairs.
Posters on church and kiosk noticeboards, often in Greek only. A translation app on your phone does the job.
