Tala sits on the hills north of Paphos, above Chloraka and Kissonerga and next to Mesogi. The Agios Neophytos monastery is just beyond the village.

What living in Tala, Cyprus is like

Tala is a hillside village about 290 m above sea level and roughly 8 km by road from Paphos centre. The 2021 census counted 3,100 residents, up from 2,695 in 2011. It has a proper village centre: a square with a church, cafés and tavernas, and older stone houses. Villa developments spread across the slopes around it, including the long-established Kamares estate.

The mix is more balanced than in Peyia. Cypriot families live alongside British and other European residents, many of them retired. English is widely spoken, but the village still feels Cypriot. The Agios Neophytos Monastery, founded in the 12th century, is about 1 km north. There is also an English-language Anglican congregation, St Stephen's, in the Stephanie Village area.

Elevation is the other draw. At 290 m, summer nights are cooler than in Kato Paphos and there is usually a breeze. The trade-off is winter: Tala gets around 520 mm of rain a year, more than the coast, and it feels damper and chillier from December to February.

What Tala is known for

The village square. Tala has a proper centre on the hill, with a church, cafés and tavernas where Cypriot families and expats mix on summer evenings. The community also runs an open-air amphitheatre used for concerts and events.

Agios Neophytos Monastery. The monastery, founded in the 12th century by the hermit Neophytos, is about 1 km north of the village. Its cave cell, the Enkleistra, is decorated with Byzantine wall paintings and is the main reason tourists drive up to Tala. The nearby Tala Cat Park, run by volunteers, cares for several hundred cats and welcomes visitors.

Views and walks. The lanes around Tala and the Kamares estate look down over Paphos and the coast. Sunset from the village edge is the local habit.

Golf and wine. Minthis golf course is about 10 km away near Tsada, and the small wineries of the Paphos hills are within 20 minutes.

The beach is a drive. Coral Bay is about 10 km away and the Kato Paphos seafront about 20 minutes. Tala is for people who are happy to visit the sea rather than live next to it.

Tala rents and property prices in 2026

Tala is mostly detached villas, so most rentals are houses rather than flats. A three-bedroom villa typically rents for €1,300–2,200 a month on a long let, and the smaller supply of two-bed apartments and townhouses for €850–1,300. Agency listings for newer villas with pools and sea views often ask €3,000 or more.

On the sale side, a snapshot of INDEX.cy listings on 27 September 2026 put the middle half of asking prices in Tala for three-bedroom houses at about €560,000–945,000 (median about €827,000). Apartments for sale are rare.

House prices in Paphos are still rising: the Central Bank of Cyprus index shows Paphos prices up 9.6% year on year in Q2 2026, with apartments up 18.5%, the fastest of any district. Asking prices on portals run well above what buyers actually pay. PwC's analysis of Land Registry data put the average 2025 Paphos transaction at about €230,000 for an apartment and €466,000 for a house.

Tala costs more than the coastal villages at the same size because of the plots, the views and the school corridor. Your euro buys space, not location: the village is 10 minutes up the hill from everything else.

The thing Tala residents mention most is the evenings. In August you can sit outside after dark without the heavy, humid air you get at sea level. The thing they warn newcomers about is January. Hillside villas with tiled floors and no central heating feel cold, so budget for heating and a dehumidifier, and ask the landlord about damp before you sign.

Tala has the best village life and views, and you pay for them. **Konia is closest to town and the airport. **Mesogi gives you a similar hillside setting next door to Tala for less rent.

Who Tala suits (and who it doesn't)

Families at the International School of Paphos are a natural fit. The school run is about 10 minutes, homes have gardens, and the village is quiet. Our best areas for families compares Tala with Konia, Universal and Mesogi.

Tala does not suit tight budgets, people who want to walk to shops or the sea, or anyone who wants a car-free life. For those, Chloraka or Kato Paphos make more sense. If you want to go higher still, Tsada is cooler and more rural.

Schools, healthcare and getting around

Schools. The International School of Paphos (ISOP, ages 2½–18, English National Curriculum to A level) is in Anavargos, about 10 minutes down the hill, and Aspire Private British School (ages 4–18) is on Tombs of the Kings Avenue at the Chloraka end, about 15 minutes. Healthcare. Paphos General Hospital in Anavargos is about 10 minutes away. Tala has a pharmacy and a medical practice, and there are many more GPs in Paphos. See our GeSY healthcare guide.

Supermarkets. Tala has mini-markets, a bakery and cafés. For a big shop, residents drive 10–15 minutes to the supermarkets in Chloraka or Anavargos (Lidl, AlphaMega, Neon Mall).

Buses. Route 604 runs from Karavella station in Paphos via Emba to Tala and the Agios Neophytos Monastery. Services are much less frequent than town routes. A single fare is €2 and a day ticket €6.50. Check current times on the Pafos Buses website before you rely on a route.

Driving. Paphos harbour is about 20 minutes, Paphos Airport about 30 minutes and Limassol about 65 minutes. The road down to Paphos is busiest at school drop-off and pick-up times.
