How much is the bus in Paphos?

A single journey on Pafos Buses district routes costs €2.00, or €3.00 after 21:00. A day pass is €6.50, and a 30-day pass on a personalised Motion card is €50. Intercity passes are priced separately, from €20 a day.

Is there a bus from Paphos airport?

Yes. Pafos Buses runs dedicated airport routes into Paphos town, and intercity airport shuttles connect Larnaca airport with Paphos. Check the current timetable before you land, especially for late flights.

Is it worth shipping my UK car?

Only if it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief and is fairly new. Otherwise VAT, possible duty, shipping and registration usually cost more than buying locally. A partner can price both options.

Do I need to retake my test to drive in Cyprus?

No. GOV.UK says UK licences are exchanged, not retested. One local guide says otherwise, so confirm with the Road Transport Department when you book.

You'll probably need a car unless you live in central Paphos or Kato Paphos and don't commute.

Transport in Paphos: do you need a car?

For most people, yes. Paphos has a bus network that runs through the town, Kato Paphos, the harbour and out to places like Coral Bay and Polis, and intercity buses link Paphos with Limassol and Nicosia. But timetables thin out in the evenings and in villages, and many residential areas are a long walk from a stop.

If you live in the centre of Paphos or Kato Paphos and don't commute, you can manage with buses, taxis and the odd hire car. If you're in Tala, Konia, Kissonerga, Peyia or any hill village, or you have school runs, plan on a car from week one.

Licence exchange

Your UK licence is valid for 6 months after you become resident. After that you must exchange it. The Road Transport Department wants form TOM 7D, a 45 × 35 mm photo, your passport, ARC and residence permit, your UK licence and evidence that you've lived here for at least 185 days. The fee is €40, or nothing if you're 65 or over. A partner times the appointment so you're not caught between the two rules.

Bringing your car

If you've owned and used your car for 6 months before moving and import it within 12 months, Cyprus Customs waives import duty and 19% VAT under transfer-of-residence relief. You can't sell it for 12 months after clearance without approval. Without relief, a UK-built car with a statement on origin pays 0% duty but still pays VAT; other cars pay 10% duty too. A partner can check a used car's registration history, MOT status and road tax before you buy, and handle the transfer of ownership at the Road Transport Department.

Buses, taxis and the airport

Pafos Buses, run by the Pafos Transport Organisation (OSYPA), covers the town, the suburbs, the villages, Polis and Latchi, and the airport. Buses are worth knowing even if you drive: a day in Nicosia by intercity bus saves the parking hassle.

The personalised Motion plastic card costs €5 and is the one that carries discounts. Children under 6, low-income pensioners and several other groups travel free; university students, pupils aged 13–18 and children up to 12 get 50% off. Single, day and night tickets are sold on the bus; passes at the information offices. The free information line is 8000 5588.

Taxis and hire cars

Taxis are easy to find in Kato Paphos and at the airport, but they add up if you rely on them daily, and they can be hard to find in villages late at night. Agree the fare or check the meter before you set off.

Many new arrivals hire a car for the first few weeks while they decide whether to ship their own or buy locally. That's often cheaper than rushing a purchase. Worked example: which bus ticket for a commuter?

A resident in Chloraka commuting into Paphos five days a week makes about 44 single journeys a month. At €2 each that's €88. A personalised 30-day pass is €50, and the annual pass works out at about €42 a month (€500 ÷ 12). If you commute all year, buy the annual pass.
