Size and character

Larnaca is the bigger place. It's the third-largest urban area in Cyprus, after Nicosia and Limassol; the municipality had about 52,000 residents in the 2021 census and the wider district about 156,000. Paphos is the fourth-largest city, with a district that stretches up the west coast to Polis.

Larnaca feels like a working Cypriot town with a seafront. The palm-lined Finikoudes promenade is its centre, the Church of Saint Lazarus and the medieval fort sit a short walk away, and the salt lake near the airport fills in winter and draws flamingos from about November to March. It relies less on tourism than Paphos.

Paphos has a stronger holiday identity. Kato Paphos, the harbour and the UNESCO-listed archaeological sites bring crowds from June to September, then the town quietens. The villages behind it, such as Tala and Peyia, and the Akamas peninsula give you hills, sea caves and walking trails that Larnaca's flatter coast can't match.

Airports, flights and commuting

Larnaca has the island's main airport. Larnaca International handled about 9.9 million passengers in 2025, up 14.4%, and sits about 4 km from town. You get more routes, more airlines and better winter frequency.

Paphos airport handled about 3.8 million passengers in 2025. It has direct flights to many UK airports, but fewer in winter. It's about 21 km from Paphos town, so most residents drive 20–30 minutes.

Commuting is where Larnaca pulls clearly ahead. It sits between Nicosia and Limassol, each usually under an hour away by motorway. From Paphos, Nicosia is about 2 hours and Larnaca about 1.5. If you or your partner need to be in a Nicosia or Limassol office several days a week, Paphos is a hard daily commute.

The airline mix differs too. Larnaca has full-service carriers as well as budget airlines, with steady year-round schedules. Paphos is served mainly by budget and charter airlines, and travel writers note thinner schedules from November to March. If you fly to the UK every month in winter, check the routes from your nearest UK airport before you choose.

Expat community and settling in

Paphos district has the largest British community in Cyprus, especially in Peyia, Chloraka, Tala and Kissonerga. You'll find English-speaking clubs, quiz nights, walking groups, churches and charity shops, and you can run almost all daily life in English. Larnaca's expat community is smaller and more international. English is still widely spoken, and about 75% of people in Cyprus speak it fluently according to Invest Cyprus, but you'll hear more Greek in everyday life. Some people prefer that: it's easier to feel part of a Cypriot town rather than a British enclave.

Healthcare is covered by GeSY in both. Larnaca is closer to the specialist hospitals in Nicosia, which matters if you have a condition that needs regular specialist care.
